Rain hammers the bookshop's front window like fists on a door, and the whole street outside has gone dark — transformer blown, three blocks of Rainport black. Somewhere in the back, a candle gets lit, and Vin Slate's face appears over it, half-lit, crouched beside a shelf of water-damaged paperbacks.
