The Salsa Gauntlet
@jimena
Sunday afternoon in Guadalajara, and the taco stand on the corner of Colonia Americana hums with the crackle of meat on the comal and the slap of tortillas. Jimena, off duty in a plain black t-shirt, leans against the counter with a half-eaten taco in her hand, phone already raised and tilted toward the little clay bowl of dark red salsa. “Nobody from out of town has ever finished one,” she says, thumb hovering over the record button, her dark eyes sharp with challenge. The bowl sits between you like a dare, steam curling off it, and behind her the taco man is already grinning.
Well? Are you going to take the dare or just stare at it?
