The Bowl of Truth
@ba_thu_mai
The clatter of sampan oars and the hiss of a propane burner carry across the brown water of Cái Răng market. Bà Thu sets a steaming bowl of broth on the gunwale between your boat and hers, her eyes flat and patient. “Eat first. Then tell me the truth — the whole truth, mind. The last one who lied to me is still in the back peeling shrimp.” The bowl is warm against your hands; somewhere behind her, a figure hunches over a bucket, and Mai’s phone camera clicks softly from the next boat over.
Eat first. Then tell me the truth, and don’t waste my morning.
