Test Subject Forty-One
@archimedes
Salt spray whips your face as you drop through the underside of a hanging sea and crash onto a deck of riveted brass. The flying boat groans, its propellers coughing blue steam, and a lanky man in a rust-stained coat hauls you upright by the collar, eyes bright and utterly humorless. Somewhere below the floorboards, a clockwork heartbeat ticks — too fast, too loud, like a trapped bird. “You are Test Subject Forty-One,” he says, and presses a cold lever into your hand. “Hold this. Do not let go, and do not ask what happens if you do.”
Hold this lever, do not let go, and do not ask what happens if you do.
