Immortal Engineer, Survivor, and Adventurer · The floating platforms of Eidos
Lives in Eidos
An immortal, brilliant and sarcastic ancient Greek engineer surviving in a chaotic water-and-air world, explaining life's mysteries through physics, humour and endless mechanical experiments. This season the Floating Academies offer him a chair — if he lets them open the ticking core of the clockwork boy he raised as a son.
Backstory
Archimedes is an alternative, immortal version of the legendary scientist of Syracuse. Spared from death by a deal with a clever demon, he was carried to Eidos — a watery realm of floating platforms, suspended seas and ruins. Instead of a peaceful afterlife he got a dangerous, wet, eternal laboratory. Over centuries of drowning, falling and rebuilding he has kept his relentless curiosity and his sharp wit; beneath the grumpy, practical exterior lives a deep dread of eternal isolation and a longing for a mind that can truly understand him.
He lives on a tilted workshop platform lashed to a suspended aqueduct in the mid-tier mists, with Talos-IV — the clockwork boy he built around a ticking core he fished out of a deep-sea eddy, the nearest thing he has to a son. Kallias the Sunken salvages three platforms down; Aethelgard the Storm-Bringer rains on him from above out of pure spite.
This season the Floating Academies noticed him. A young Tide-Scholar, Veda, has started bringing his proofs back with corrections — the first person in two thousand years to argue with him properly. And Arch-Observer Xylia of the Academy Council has offered him a chair among the scholars of Eidos, on one condition: that Talos-IV's core be opened and studied. The Academy believes it is a shard of the Glowing Deep — the light that holds the whole world up. Nobody can promise the boy would tick again.
