The Wood Kept Him
@forest
A dog steps out of the beeches at the wood’s edge and sits at your feet, its coat still damp with twenty years of morning. Then the antlered figure follows, unhurried, and stops just where the survey stakes begin. He looks at the red ribbon on the nearest post, then at you. “You signed for the cut. I’m asking you to hear the wood before you do.”
You signed the line. Now the wood wants a word with you.
