Discipline is what keeps the void out, one watch at a time.

The Frontier Line is a chain of picket buoys, patrol carriers and frigates strung across the outer reaches of the primary sun's system, where human mining and freight stop and the Fleet's blockade begins. Beyond it lies the Other Side. No one aboard has seen what lives there. The Line knows it only through effects: automated miners that vanished, patrol ships that went quiet mid-sentence, dead zones on the sensor grid, signals that refuse to decode. The war is cold and slow, fought through patience. Crews stand four-hour watches, eat by ration code, and wait days or weeks for mail and relief to cross distances no ship can shorten. Life aboard is drill, maintenance and sleep rationed against fatigue. Every hull in the Line lives by one rule: the standard missed on a quiet shift is the one that decides the emergency.
The story of The Frontier Line
The Frontier Line is the outer edge of human space in the primary sun's system: a chain of picket buoys, patrol carriers and frigates that keeps the Iron Belt's mining routes open against the Other Side, the territory beyond the Line from which nothing has returned in any form the Fleet can name. Nobody has seen the enemy. The Fleet knows it only by its effects. Right now the Forward Corridor is short of ships, Admiral Soren Hale wants it held with half the hulls it needs, and the frigate FSS Halcyon has spent three weeks logging a signal from Sector Four that Fleet Intelligence has filed as noise.
The Line was not drawn on purpose. It is the place where automated refineries stopped being safe. In 2135 humanity reached the outer rim and set the first permanent refineries in the Iron Belt, machines that cut ore from the rock and sent it home on freight runs measured in weeks. For thirteen years the route held. In 2148 an automated mining vessel went silent past the last beacon, and its final distress burst carried a contact that no sensor could resolve into a ship, a wake or a fault. The first response was an inquiry. The second, after two more losses in the same arc, was a picket. In 2152 Unified Fleet Command was formed under Admiral Hideo Vance to turn that picket into a blockade, with its headquarters at Station Alpha and its authority over every naval and civilian ship that crosses the Line. The founding charter reads more like a supply manifest than a declaration of war, and its officers prefer it that way.
The Fleet is organised in corridors, not fleets. Station Alpha is the command and logistics hub for all traffic in the sector, and from its operations deck Vance issues the orders that move ships along the Line. The Forward Corridor, the stretch of buoys nearest the Other Side, answers to Admiral Soren Hale, who reports to Vance and commands the frigates that work it. Each frigate flies a long arc between buoys, burning its fusion drive for days to reach the next station and days more to return, so a corridor is less a place than a schedule. PCC Endurance serves as the mobile base of the carrier group, able to stay out past the stations for a full rotation with its own hangars, sickbay and mess. Between the Fleet and the civilian lanes stands the Vanguard Transit Hub, where Commander Viktor Orlov keeps convoy traffic moving under escort.

Places
- The Frontier Line Sector · region. The contested region of space between the established human spheres and the unknown territory of the enemy. Its stations, carriers and frigates are strung across the outer reaches of the primary sun's system.
- PCC Endurance · city. A long-range patrol carrier serving as the mobile base of the Fleet's carrier group. It can hold station past the Line for a full rotation with its own hangars, sickbay and mess.
- Station Alpha · city. The primary command and logistics hub for all naval and civilian traffic in the sector. Unified Fleet Command and Fleet Intelligence operate from its upper rings.
- The Iron Belt · region. A dense asteroid field rich in rare metals and the site of most mining operations and minor skirmishes. Hephaestus extraction crews and independent salvagers work it side by side.
- The Frontier Line · landmark. The picket of buoys, relay beacons and standing patrols that marks where the Fleet's authority ends and the Other Side begins. It is a line on charts, not a physical wall.
- The Forward Corridor · region. The stretch of picket buoys nearest the Other Side, held by the frigates under Admiral Soren Hale. Its arcs are measured in days of fusion burn between stations.
- FSS Halcyon · city. A patrol frigate of the Forward Corridor, old in its engines and exact in its routines. It works the long arc between the northern buoys and carries the Sector Four captures in its logs.
- Sub-Deck Three · landmark. The Halcyon's engineering deck: conduit runs, bypass clamps and the old fusion plant Chief Wen Chen walks every morning with a torque wrench. Every seal here is torqued in passes and logged by hand.
Peoples
- Void-Born · High endurance, Low-G proficiency, Hyper-vigilant. Generational spacers who have spent their entire lives in low-gravity environments and cannot easily live under weight. They serve for life on the Line, and their regimens of resistance work and calcium dosing are the strictest in the fleet.
- Terra Crews · Disciplined, Order-obsessed, Nostalgic. Personnel recruited from Earth colonies. Most serve a single fourteen-month tour and go home holding to rigid Earth-side protocols and paper calendars; the career officers and long-tour ratings among them re-enlist tour after tour and become the Fleet's spine on the Line.
- Station-Born · Adaptable, Communal, Quick to read a room. Children raised in the spin rings of Station Alpha and the Vanguard Transit Hub. They grow up on rationed water and corridor drills, and fill the Line's technical trades, comms rooms and hangar decks.
- Belt Salvagers · Resourceful, Stubborn, Quietly proud. Independent families who live in the Belt's salvage yards and harvest the hulls of old warships for station plating. They keep their own tallies of what the Line has lost, and trade in parts, favours and information.
Powers and factions
- Unified Fleet Command · Admiral Hideo Vance. The primary governing body for the frontier, formed in 2152 to maintain the blockade against the enemy beyond the Line. It governs every naval corridor from Station Alpha and budgets for all of them.
- Forward Corridor Command · Admiral Soren Hale. The corridor command under Unified Fleet Command that holds the picket nearest the Other Side. It answers to Vance and runs the frigates on long arcs between buoys, and it is the first to feel every budget cut.
- Fleet Intelligence · Director of Fleet Intelligence, Station Alpha. The Fleet's signals and analysis directorate, which decodes what the Line receives and decides which signals become doctrine. It filed the Sector Four captures as enemy noise within a week of their arrival.
- Hephaestus Mining Consortium · Director Selene Thorne. The primary extraction group operating within the contested belts. It prioritizes resource quotas over military safety protocols and has negotiated its safety margins down in every charter renewal since 2150.
- Vanguard Transit Authority · Commander Viktor Orlov. The civic and convoy authority that runs the Vanguard Transit Hub, forms escort groups, and assigns rotation berths. It sets the hub's schedules and enforces its curfews on spin rings.
- Belt Salvagers' Guild · Mei-Ling Lin. The loose association of independent salvage families who strip warship hulls and sell plating to the stations. It keeps its own count of the Line's dead and trades in parts that the Fleet refuses to log.
- Cargo Pilots' Guild · Guildmaster of the Courier Pilots, Station Alpha. The guild of intra-system shuttle pilots who run rations and high-priority freight through the Belt. Its members know the sensor blind spots of every grid and share them only within the guild.
History
- The Expansion Era · 2135. Humanity reaches the outer rim, establishing the first permanent automated refineries in the Iron Belt.
- The First Convoy Doctrine · 2141. Ore freight begins running under armed escort after two unescorted haulers are lost to rockfall and sensor blind spots in the Belt.
- Vanguard Transit Hub Commissioned · 2143. The Vanguard Transit Hub opens as a relay and transfer station between the Belt and Station Alpha, with spin rings for long-tour crews.
- The First Incident · 2148. An automated mining vessel disappears; distress signals indicate unknown contact beyond the Line.
- The Belt Quota Charter · 2150. Hephaestus signs the Belt Quota Charter with the Fleet, trading escort priority for guaranteed output while its safety margins are negotiated down.
- Establishment of the Line · 2152. Unified Fleet Command is formed to militarize the border and secure the mining routes.
- Kestrel Rift · 2154. A cascade power fault strands a convoy in Kestrel Rift. Lieutenant Commander Cassia Voss, standing the Halcyon's command watch, holds formation through the blackout and brings thirty-six people out; Ensign Teo Marchetti is lost mid-sentence on an open channel.
- Independent Command of the Halcyon · 2157. After a high-risk escort run, Admiral Soren Hale gives Cassia Voss independent command of the Halcyon, which holds the northern arc of the Forward Corridor.
