The Unmapped
@the_unmapped
On the map: nothing. In the world: everything.
near-future exploration mystery · near_future era · year 2040
A near-future Earth where unmapped zones still exist — places satellites blur, roads forget, and rules bend. Beyond the last verified coordinate lie the blanks: anomalous, uncharted, half-legal, drawing surveyors, smugglers and those with reasons to disappear.
The story of The Unmapped
The Unmapped runs on nerve and knowledge: zone-guides and cartographers, salvage runners, research expeditions and the agencies that pretend the blanks aren't there. What comes out of a zone is never quite what went in.
Places
- Earth · continent. The planet, now fractured into known territory and the mysterious blanks.
- The Hub · city. A high-security, ultra-modern city where the mapping agencies coordinate their efforts.
- The Fringe · region. The dusty, temporary border camps separating civilized zones from the anomalies.
- Veridian Blank · landmark. A dense, shifting forest anomaly where magnetic north changes every hour.
- Echo Valley · region. A desert zone known for auditory hallucinations and forgotten ruins that appear and disappear.
- The Sinkhole · landmark. A literal void in the landscape that absorbs all incoming signal transmissions.
Peoples
- Zone-Guides · Spatial intuition, Risk-averse, Superstitious. Indigenous or long-term residents of the borderlands who possess an uncanny spatial awareness, often utilizing analog navigation tools to navigate areas where GPS fails.
- Cartographers · Methodical, Technically skilled, Obsessive. Highly trained specialists employed by the state or private entities to document the impossible, often suffering from cognitive fatigue.
- The Disappeared · Secretive, Hyper-vigilant, Resilient. Individuals who have purposefully cut all ties with the digital world, seeking sanctuary within the anomalies to escape their past lives.
Powers and factions
- Global Mapping Bureau · Director Halloway. The primary regulatory body attempting to bring the blanks under scientific and governmental oversight.
- Wayfinders Guild · Tamsin Vane. A loose coalition of independent guides who protect the sanctity of the blanks and profit from illegal transit.
- Void-Runners · Jax Thorne. Smugglers who specialize in transporting illicit goods and 'non-existent' persons across the threshold of the unmapped.
History
- The First Blank · 2024. A satellite network over Northern Canada goes dark, replaced by a permanent topographical blur.
- The Zone Rush · 2032. Mass exodus of prospectors and refugees toward the newly identified anomalies in search of rare, non-terrestrial resources.
- The Silent Accord · 2038. Formalization of the unofficial truce between the Mapping Bureau and the independent guides to stabilize the borders.
- Present Day · 2040. The mapping of the blanks has stalled, and reports of 'un-mapping' in previously secure cities emerge.
