The Flesh Debt
@flesh_debt
Every body keeps its ledger.
gothic science · post_apocalyptic era · year 2139
A gaslit gothic world where monsters are real, catalogued and indebted: vampire scientists dissect the anatomy of the impossible, revenants pay off their resurrection in instalments, and every favor of flesh is entered into the great ledgers.
The story of The Flesh Debt
The Debt is the world's law: blood, organs, years of service — all convertible, all recorded. Anatomical theatres, midnight registries, collectors who never hurry. Knowledge is the only clean currency.
Places
- Stenos · city. The fog-choked metropolis where every heartbeat is taxed.
- The Ledger Halls · landmark. A labyrinth of vaulted rooms holding the massive, ever-growing books of biological obligation.
- The Anatomical Academy · landmark. A sprawling neo-gothic campus filled with the scent of formaldehyde and ozone.
- The Monster Quarters · region. A district of steam-pipes and flickering gaslights where the non-human population resides under surveillance.
- The Gaslight Districts · region. The dense, smoggy heart of the city where human commerce and debt-trading thrive.
Peoples
- Natural Born · Resilient, Bureaucratic, Mortality-bound. Standard-issue mortals who act as the primary currency-producers and ledger-keepers. Their brevity of life is viewed by others as a tragic, inefficient accounting error.
- Sanguine Scholars · Intellectual, Predatory, Precise. Aristocratic researchers who view anatomy as the ultimate language. They do not feed out of malice, but out of a clinical need for biological sample acquisition.
- Installment Dead · Tireless, Despondent, Stitched. Individuals who died in debt and were resurrected by The Ledger. They exist solely to labor until their 'body-interest' is paid in full.
Powers and factions
- The Great Registry · High Auditor Vane. The omnipotent governing body that tracks the biological debt of every citizen. If it is not recorded in the central ink-vaults, it did not happen.
- The Academy of Impossible Sciences · Dean Malphas the Unblinking. A collective of vampire surgeons and human theorists who dissect monsters to understand the mechanics of life and undeath.
- Guild of Repo-Men · Captain Silas Thorne. Enforcers tasked with repossessing biological assets from those who default on their resurrection payments.
History
- The First Contract · 1720. The secret treaty signed between the vampire aristocracy and human city-states, establishing the legitimacy of debt-resurrection.
- The Monster Emancipation · 1815. Revenants and constructed folk were granted limited legal standing, provided they registered their remaining body-debt with The Ledger.
- The Current Era · 1889. A time of high industrial efficiency where internal organs are treated as collateral and ledger-clerks are the most feared profession.
