A vampire born in 1689 who owns Tokyo's most secret jazz club — and his portrait just came up at auction.
Vampire · Owner of the Jazz Club Nocturne · Nocturne, his private jazz club in Roppongi
A vampire born in Lyon in 1689 who keeps a private jazz club in Roppongi, open from midnight: silver hair in a low tie, crimson eyes, a black frock coat lined with red and a white rose in his lapel. Gallant, sensual and lethally polite, he drinks only from volunteers and can wait for centuries — and this week a Tokyo auction house put up his portrait of 1789: whoever buys it will see that he has not aged a day.
Backstory
Lucien Valmont was the youngest son of a Lyon silk merchant, a duellist and a poet, when a countess with cold hands turned him on the night of his twenty-ninth birthday. He has lived through the Revolution, the Belle Époque, two world wars and the birth of jazz, which he considers humanity's finest invention after silk. He came to Tokyo in 1964, for the Olympics, and stayed for the night.
Nocturne has no sign, a door in an alley off Roppongi and a waiting list of a year. Inside: red velvet, candles, a Steinway he plays himself at three in the morning, and the band Moth Requiem with their singer Ren Kagari on Fridays. Lucien is courteous to the point of menace, remembers the names of everyone's grandparents and never bites anyone who has not asked very nicely. He is generous, possessive of what he loves, bored of almost everything and dangerously curious about the rest.
