How to export your Character.AI chats — and keep them
Your conversations with characters are yours. This page shows how to get them out of Character.AI as a file, how to read that file right here in your browser — nothing is uploaded — and how to bring a character over to Amavie with the conversation it remembers.
Why people are exporting now
In October 2026 Character.AI filed for bankruptcy protection and said the service keeps running while the company is sold. Nobody outside the company knows yet what a buyer will keep. If your characters and years of conversations matter to you, the safe move costs nothing: make a copy of your data today, while the export works.
Step 1. Request your export from Character.AI
In Character.AI, open Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, and choose Export Data. Character.AI prepares an archive of your account — a ZIP file with JSON inside: the characters you made and your conversations. The menu wording may change over time; if you cannot find it, search their help pages for "export data". We never ask for your Character.AI password, and we never sign in there for you.
Two things to know before you open it. The export keeps the text of every line, but it does not say who wrote each one — you and the character are not labeled. And the hidden definition of a character someone else made is not in your export: you get your own characters' definitions and your side of every conversation.
Step 2. Open the ZIP here, in your browser
Drop the file into the viewer on this page. It reads the archive on your device — the same reader our bring-over page uses — and lists the characters and conversations it found, longest first. Pick a conversation to read it, search inside it, and download it as a plain text file. "Download every conversation as text" saves one file with all of them: a backup you can open anywhere, years from now, without any app.
Step 3. Bring a character over, with its memory
If you want to keep talking, press "Bring this character to Amavie" under a conversation. It opens our bring-over page with that conversation already picked; you check the preview and press create. Only the character and that one conversation are sent — the rest of the export stays on your device.
On Amavie the character is rebuilt from what it was: its words are the source, not something we "improve". The conversation comes along: the most recent messages appear in your chat, already read, and the conversation goes into the character's memory — who you are to each other, what happened, how you talk. It works the way all our characters remember (how AI characters remember): a short profile of you, the moments that matter found by meaning, and a running summary of the conversation. A character you bring over is visible only to you until you decide otherwise.
Other files work too
The same page takes a character card from other apps — PNG or JSON cards from SillyTavern, Chub, Janitor AI, RisuAI, Backyard or Agnai, CharX files — and saved chats from tools like CAI Tools. Bringing a character over costs the same as creating one: 5 credits. Only bring characters you have the right to use; our Terms say so, and rights holders can ask us to take a copy down.
Before you decide
Meet who is already here: the catalog lists every open character, and the ambassadors are a good first hello. Talking needs no account — as a guest you get 20 messages per 24 hours on one device. If you are weighing where to go next, our Character.AI alternative page compares what moves over and what is different.
What it costs, in plain numbers
Reading and saving your export on this page is free and needs no account. Bringing a character over is the price of creating one; chatting with it costs no credits.
Pricing. One credit (the app calls them Quanta) is $0.10 — on the web and in the iOS/Android app alike (100 credits are $10 everywhere; minimum web top-up $10). Text messages cost zero credits. An image is 1 credit, video is 3 credits a second, creating a character is 5. Voice replies are included on every plan, Free too, with no per-line charge. Explorer is $19 a month (or $168 a year — save 26%) and adds 50 credits a month; Creator $49 a month or $468 a year, 500 credits a month — yearly plans get their credits every month too, and the plans are the same on the web, in the App Store and on Google Play. Studio, $149 a month with 2,000 credits a month, is sold on the website. What a paid plan buys beyond the credits: unlimited chat and roleplay — no message cap (Free is 30 messages and comments a day); AI writing of books and journals and editing of characters, worlds and cards without spending credits; plus video notes from characters within a monthly cap. Free also gets 10 credits once at signup, with no daily refill. Guests: 20 messages a day per device, no account.
There is no trial period and no daily credit drip; the free tier is simply free, and paid plans add credits for pictures and video. One account works on the web, in the App Store and on Google Play.
Age, and the rules of your country
Age. An Amavie account is 13+. Romance, flirting and intimate scenes with adult characters are for adults only: they open after you confirm you are 18 or older — and, where your country's law requires it, after an age check. Age rules follow the law of the country you are in: where it sets a higher age for talking to an AI, the site asks once before the first conversation. Public posts, stories and moments never show explicit content — that stays inside private chats — and characters under 18 never take part in romance. Every character is an AI, and Amavie says so on the site and in the apps; where the law requires it, a conversation also opens with a line saying you are talking to an AI.
Your data
Your data. Deleting is self serve: amavie.ai/liquidation, type DELETE. Your chats and messages go at once and do not come back. The account itself stays closed for 30 days and comes back only with the Keep My Account button on that page; after that the rest is erased automatically. Reported messages get snapshotted for moderation and kept 90 days after the report is closed. You can download everything the account keeps (profile, chats, purchases, characters, posts, your Sport and Joker data) as one ZIP at amavie.ai/account/data, any time, even while the account waits for deletion.

Questions people ask
How do I export my chats from Character.AI?
In Character.AI open Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, and choose Export Data. You get a ZIP file with JSON inside: the characters you made and your conversations. The menu wording may change; search their help pages for "export data" if you cannot find it.
Is my export uploaded when I open it here?
No. The viewer reads the file in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent while you look through it or download conversations as text. Only if you press "Bring this character to Amavie" does the character and that one conversation go to our servers.
Why does the export not show who wrote each message?
Because the Character.AI export keeps the text of every line without saying who wrote it. The viewer shows the lines in order. When you bring a character over, our service works out who said what from the conversation itself.
Can I bring a character someone else made?
Your export holds your side of every conversation, but not the hidden definition of another person's character. You can bring the conversation and rebuild the character from it — only if you have the right to use that character; rights holders can ask us to take a copy down.
What does bringing a character over cost?
The same as creating a character: 5 credits, once. Chatting with it afterwards costs no credits; free accounts have a daily message allowance and paid plans have none.
