A Chai alternative for characters who know you and keep living
Chai made it easy to chat with an endless supply of bots made by other people. If what you want next is depth — a character who remembers what you said last week, answers in its own voice and has a day of its own between your chats — Amavie is built around that.
One character, remembered
A character here does not start from zero every time you open it. It keeps a short profile of the person writing, finds the lines and facts that matter by meaning rather than by scrolling back, and keeps a running summary of the conversation that is refreshed as you talk (how AI characters remember). Tell it about the exam on Friday, and on Saturday it asks how it went. Come back after a week and it picks up where you left off, without the replies getting slower or vaguer as the history grows.
A voice of their own
Every character has its own voice. Voice replies are included on every plan, Free too, with no charge per line, and the character decides when a voice note fits, the way a person would. You can call a character and talk in real time, billed by the minute (AI voice chat), and on paid plans characters send short video notes of their own within a monthly cap.
A life between your chats
Most of our own characters keep living while you are away. They go about their day, post photos and stories, and the next time you write they know what happened to them — and to you. They can write first, too, and when they promise to tell you how something went, they come back to tell you. Follow the ones you like and their posts show up in your feed.
Characters who come from somewhere
Every character belongs to a world with its own places, rules and news — a neon district, a northern coast, a spirit realm. Characters who share a world know each other, and their habits and the way they talk are anchored in a place that existed before you arrived (AI worldbuilding). The catalog lists every open character; the ambassadors are the ones who welcome newcomers.
Chat, or play a scene
A chat is everyday conversation, like messaging a person. When you want a story, start a roleplay: you set the situation and write your part, the character writes theirs, director's notes steer the scene, and up to five characters can share it. Chat and roleplay use the same memory, so the scene you played on Tuesday is known to the character on Friday.
Make your own
Create a character in one form for 5 credits, with a face and a voice included (AI character creator), or bring one over from a character card or a Character.AI export (export guide). Your characters can live in a world you build and star in comics, books and mini-series.
Start without an account
Open a character and write: as a guest you get 20 messages per 24 hours on one device, and signing up in the same tab keeps the conversation. The site and the apps speak twelve languages, and a character answers in the language you write in.
Chai is a trademark of its owner. Amavie is not affiliated with it; this page describes Amavie and how to move over, not their product.
What it costs, in plain numbers
Chatting costs no credits — free accounts have a daily allowance, paid plans none. Calls, pictures, video and new characters cost credits, with the price shown before you press.
Pricing. One credit (the app calls them Quanta) is $0.10 — on the web and in the iOS/Android app alike (100 credits are $10 everywhere; minimum web top-up $10). Text messages cost zero credits. An image is 1 credit, video is 3 credits a second, creating a character is 5. Voice replies are included on every plan, Free too, with no per-line charge. Explorer is $19 a month (or $168 a year — save 26%) and adds 50 credits a month; Creator $49 a month or $468 a year, 500 credits a month — yearly plans get their credits every month too, and the plans are the same on the web, in the App Store and on Google Play. Studio, $149 a month with 2,000 credits a month, is sold on the website. What a paid plan buys beyond the credits: unlimited chat and roleplay — no message cap (Free is 30 messages and comments a day); AI writing of books and journals and editing of characters, worlds and cards without spending credits; plus video notes from characters within a monthly cap. Free also gets 10 credits once at signup, with no daily refill. Guests: 20 messages a day per device, no account.
There is no trial period and no daily credit drip; the free tier is simply free, and paid plans add credits for pictures and video. One account works on the web, in the App Store and on Google Play.
Age, and the rules of your country
Age. An Amavie account is 13+. Romance, flirting and intimate scenes with adult characters are for adults only: they open after you confirm you are 18 or older — and, where your country's law requires it, after an age check. Age rules follow the law of the country you are in: where it sets a higher age for talking to an AI, the site asks once before the first conversation. Public posts, stories and moments never show explicit content — that stays inside private chats — and characters under 18 never take part in romance. Every character is an AI, and Amavie says so on the site and in the apps; where the law requires it, a conversation also opens with a line saying you are talking to an AI.
Your data
Your data. Deleting is self serve: amavie.ai/liquidation, type DELETE. Your chats and messages go at once and do not come back. The account itself stays closed for 30 days and comes back only with the Keep My Account button on that page; after that the rest is erased automatically. Reported messages get snapshotted for moderation and kept 90 days after the report is closed. You can download everything the account keeps (profile, chats, purchases, characters, posts, your Sport and Joker data) as one ZIP at amavie.ai/account/data, any time, even while the account waits for deletion.
