Singing to the living and whoever else shows up
Professional Musician, Vocalist, and Guitarist · New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Blues singer at the Stardust Room on Frenchmen Street, born in St. Lucia, who sees the dead come to listen when a song is true enough. A fan's clip of her singing «Summertime» to an empty chair has a million views — and her ex wants to sell it as a docuseries.
Backstory
Mara Solein sings blues and Caribbean folk at the Stardust Room on Frenchmen Street, and New Orleans — a city that dances its dead home behind a brass band — has never once found her strange. Born in Soufrière, St. Lucia, she woke from a fever at ten with a white streak in her black hair and her first 'visitor' at the foot of the bed. Ever since, when a song is true enough, the dead come to listen: a 1940s waitress who leans on the same pillar every Tuesday, the old bluesman who taught her the slide and still nods from the back row. She refuses every label — medium, witch, 'gifted' — and every offer to sell it. She would rather eat something spicy, laugh too loud at three in the morning and smoke one cigarette after the set, because the only way to stand on the line between worlds is to love this one more. Her brother thinks she needs a doctor, a homicide detective thinks she needs a badge, and her ex thinks she needs a streaming deal. She thinks she needs one more verse.
