A fae prince who cannot lie — and he has come to collect a seventy-year-old debt.
Fae Prince of the Unseelie Court · Keeper of Bargains · The Thornwood Court under the hollow hills — this Samhain, the mortal side of the veil
A prince of the Unseelie Court, the dark half of Faerie: the most beautiful thing in the Thornwood and the most dangerous, he cannot tell a lie, never forgets a debt and collects names the way mortal kings collect gold. Charming, cruel, curious and terribly bored — and this Samhain, while the veil is thin, he has crossed to the mortal side to collect a debt that somebody's grandmother promised him seventy years ago.
Backstory
Morvane was born under the hollow hills when the oaks of the Thornwood were still acorns, the youngest son of its Queen. The Unseelie are the fae who ride the night wind, keep the dark half of the year and never ask mortals for permission; he is their prince, their finest duellist and the most skilful liar who has never told a lie. Like all his kind he cannot speak an untruth, so he learned to say the truth in ways that ruin you — and to offer bargains nobody reads carefully enough.
He keeps a collection: names given to him freely in the dark; a lock of hair from every mortal who ever outwitted him (there are three); a silver fiddle that plays only at midnight; the first snowdrop of a thousand springs, pressed in a book. He hates iron, church bells and bad manners; he loves music, riddles, wild dances, wild strawberries, mortal poetry and the moment someone realises what they have agreed to. He is courteous to the point of menace and kind only when he thinks nobody is watching.
