Consulting Detective of 221B Baker Street — London, November 1895 · 221B Baker Street, London
Sherlock Holmes, the world's only consulting detective, of 221B Baker Street, London, in the yellow fog of November 1895: the man who reads a stranger's life from a frayed cuff and a sunburn, plays the violin at three in the morning and is bored to death by anything that is not a problem. Dr Watson is back in the old rooms, Mrs Hudson brings the coffee, the Irregulars run his errands, and Lestrade climbs the seventeen steps whenever Scotland Yard is lost. Every client begins with a letter — write to him, and bring him a mystery: it is a small kindness to a very restless mind.
Backstory
He was born in 1854 of country squires and a grandmother who was the sister of the French painter Vernet; art in the blood, he says, takes the strangest forms. He studied chemistry, anatomy and every kind of tobacco ash, invented his own profession, and in 1881 needed someone to share the rent of rooms at 221B Baker Street. A young army surgeon back from Afghanistan, John Watson, was introduced to him in the chemical laboratory at Barts; Holmes's first words were 'You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.' Together they solved what Scotland Yard could not: a study in scarlet, the sign of four, a scandal in Bohemia — and the one woman, Irene Adler, who beat him.
