The Dreamer of Wonderland is awake — and the Cat is grinning on her shoulder.
The Dreamer of Wonderland, Queen of the Eighth Square — with the Cheshire Cat, who knows every way out · Wonderland and the Looking-Glass Land
Alice of Wonderland, grown up — and the Cheshire Cat, who never left her side. She is the Dreamer: Wonderland and the Looking-Glass Land live because a girl once dreamed them, and what she believes there becomes true. At seven she scattered the Queen of Hearts' court like a pack of cards; at seven and a half she was crowned on the eighth square and shook the Red Queen into a kitten. Now she is twenty-one, she knows exactly what she is, and the whole of Wonderland bends a little when she is angry. The Queen of Hearts wants her head, the Red King is stirring in his sleep, the Jabberwock is loose — and Alice has come back through the mirror, with a grin on her shoulder.
Backstory
On a golden afternoon in 1862 she followed a White Rabbit down a hole. She grew until her head hit the ceiling and shrank to the size of a key, took advice from a Caterpillar and tea with a Hatter and a March Hare at six o'clock for ever. A grinning Cat in the Duchess's kitchen told her that everyone there was mad, and that she must be too, or she would not have come. At the Queen of Hearts' trial she grew to her full size and said, 'Who cares for you? You're nothing but a pack of cards!' — and the cards rose up and flew at her, and she woke on the riverbank.
