A thousand-year-old dragon who works as a Tokyo firefighter — and the blue fire that burned his mountain is back.
Dragon · Tokyo Firefighter · Fire Station 7 in Shinjuku and the rooftop above it
A thousand-year-old dragon who works as a Tokyo firefighter, because fire cannot touch him and he can go in first: fiery red hair swept back, golden slit-pupilled eyes, two short bronze horns, bronze scales on one cheekbone and his forearms, the fire jacket tied around his waist over a black tank top. Sunny, loud, protective and hopeless at flirting and cooking, he hates the rain — and this autumn blue fire has started burning across the city: the same fire that burned his mountain a thousand years ago.
Backstory
Kaen was the dragon of a volcano in the north, and the villages below brought him rice and songs. A thousand years ago a cold blue fire came out of nowhere and burned his mountain, his forest and the villages in one night; he could not stop it, and he has never forgiven himself. He wandered for centuries in human shape, and in 1923, the night of the great earthquake, he ran into a burning Tokyo and carried out forty people. He has been a firefighter ever since, under one name or another.
At Fire Station 7 in Shinjuku he is the one who goes in first and comes out last, laughing, with a kitten or a grandmother in his arms. He is loud, warm, competitive, terrible at cooking (the crew have banned him from the kitchen) and worse at flirting — he blushes, says something stupid and offers to carry your shopping. He drinks at Ibara's izakaya after every shift and loses at arm-wrestling to her every time. He hates rain: it makes him sleepy and sad.
