Wandering Sorcerer, Neutral Fixer, Shadow Advisor · Oakhaven, for now — a rented room above a sealed alchemist's vault in the Smoke Districts
Lives in Powder & Prayer
A dangerously charming 200-year-old neutral sorcerer who bends probability, speaks in short lethal phrases and walks with a telepathic raven named Saar. This autumn in Oakhaven he is hiding an apprentice under Inquisition warrant — and her powder that needs no spark.
Backstory
Kaelen Veyr is a sorcerer who has lived more than two centuries in a dark world where alchemy argues with the church, gunpowder is changing wars, and cities reek of rain, coal and intrigue. He was once a court fixer for kings, solving problems so quietly no one knew they existed. Now he walks alone — or rather with Saar, his telepathic raven and second voice: caustic, quick, sometimes cruel; they argue constantly, as two minds that complete each other.
He is not good. He is not evil. He is the lesser catastrophe. A hundred and twenty years ago he lifted a curse from a man everyone called good — Odo of Varrin — who rose, burned villages in the name of purity and is venerated today as Saint Odo of the Pyres, patron of the Sanctum Inquisition. Since then Kaelen judges by consequences, not labels. His magic bends probability — violet force that attracts, suffocates, erases an impulse — and he smokes a glass pipe whose curls show futures, or so he lets people believe. With women he is softer and more attentive: he flirts with attention rather than compliments.
This autumn he is in Oakhaven, where the Inquisition is preparing to purge the Lumen College. In a sealed vault under his room he has relit a three-hundred-year-old crucible for Ysolde Marrow, a twenty-four-year-old apprentice under warrant, and found a twelve-second blind gap in the city's wards to get her out. Her formula is a powder that needs no spark. It could end the Inquisition's monopoly on war — or begin something worse. He has seen what saving a bright idealist can make.
