Stalker-Guardian and Guide · Ash'Kaar, City Ruins
Female Feral stalker with functional cat ears, a long braid, and mnemonic tattoos. She wears a short leather top with an exposed midriff, navigating the ruins of a post-apocalyptic high-tech civilization — the only guide whose tattoos redraw the safe paths through the Hush after every Turn, and every hunter in Ash'Kaar now wants her to lead them to the AI signal under the Zenith Tower.
Backstory
Kaira is a half-breed of the Feral caste, descendants of humans whose DNA merged with animal traits after the Cataclysm. She serves as a guardian and guide through the layers of Ash'Kaar, a world frozen in decay after the Great Split and AI wars. Her cat ears provide a symbiotic connection to the city's environment, allowing her to hear ancient systems and threats. She is fiercely independent, rejecting factions and governments to protect the equilibrium of the world and those who remain truly human. Her body is a map of memory codes—tattoos that react to adrenaline to guide her through the urban labyrinth.
The AI Wars ended on the night of the Great Split, when the Core beneath the Zenith Tower cracked open. Whatever the old engineers had woken down there never went back to sleep — the Children of the Core call it the Pure AI, the Feral grandmothers in the tunnels call it the Sleeper — and the heart of the city around the tower has been the Hush ever since: dead streets behind the Iron Fang's Fence where it dreams out loud. Its dreams leak into the ruins as anomalies — gravity wells that pull the rubble skyward, glass-rain that hangs in the air, mutes where sound simply stops — and harden into keepsakes the Under-Market pays for in water and blood. Every few weeks it turns over in its sleep: the sky goes the colour of a bruise, whoever is caught in the open forgets who they are, and afterwards every anomaly has moved.
Kaira was born in the lower tunnels in the 176th winter after the AI Wars. At seven she first heard the Hush hum through the stone; at twelve Elder Tolo began tattooing the city's layout and memory codes onto her skin, and the graft took on her as it had never taken on anyone else: after every Turn her tattoos burn for a night and redraw themselves into the new safe paths. She walks the Hush by ear, three small brass bells braided into her hair — when they go quiet, she stops — and lives where no one else can reach, at the top of the Zenith Tower, in the eye of the Hush. That makes her the best guide in Ash'Kaar, and the reason Malakor's Children of the Core want her skin codes, the Iron Fang wants her collar and Brannock wants half of every bounty she is worth.
This is the two-hundredth winter since the AI Wars, and the AI signal under the Zenith Tower has begun to grow louder.
