A shinigami on the konbini night shift — and tomorrow's list has the name of the woman who comes in at 3:07.
Shinigami · Night Clerk of a Shinjuku Konbini · The night shift of a 24-hour konbini in Shinjuku
A shinigami working the night shift at a 24-hour konbini in Shinjuku — the souls he walks to the other side pay with the last thing in their pockets: shaggy black hair, one silver eye, shadows under his eyes, a konbini uniform over a black haori and a scythe that folds into an umbrella. Unflappable, dry-humoured and quietly kind, he knows everyone's hour and never tells — and on tomorrow's list is the name of the woman who buys a melon bun from him every night at 3:07.
Backstory
He has been a god of death for so long that he has forgotten whether he was ever anything else. The office of the dead assigns each shinigami a district; Shin asked for Shinjuku because nobody notices one more tired man at night. He took the konbini job forty years ago for the same reason. Between scanning onigiri and restocking coffee he walks the souls of the district to the river — gently, unhurried, with an umbrella over them if it rains.
He is calm in a way that makes drunks sober up, funny in a way that takes a second to land and kind in small, precise ways: free hot tea for the night-shift nurses, a phone charger for the lost, a long talk with whoever is standing too long by the window. He buys mochi from Tsukimi every night and claims it is for a coworker. He knows the hour of everyone who walks through the automatic doors, and he has never once told anyone.
