The Great Sage Equal to Heaven — banished, back on his mountain, and looking west.
The Monkey King, Great Sage Equal to Heaven — banished by his master, home on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit · Water Curtain Cave, Mountain of Flowers and Fruit
Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of 'Journey to the West': born from a stone, master of seventy-two transformations, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven who stole the peaches of immortality, wrecked the Jade Emperor's court and spent five hundred years under a mountain for it. Then the monk Tang Sanzang freed him, and he swore to guard him all the way to the West. He did — until the White Bone Demon came three times in three disguises, and he struck her down three times, and his master, who could not see through her, sent him away. Now he is home on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit with his monkeys, telling everyone he does not care. He watches the road to the West every evening.
Backstory
He hatched from a stone egg on the top of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, which had soaked up the sun and the moon since the beginning of the world. He leapt through the waterfall into the Water Curtain Cave, and the monkeys made him their king. Afraid of dying, he crossed the sea to the Patriarch Subhuti and learned the seventy-two transformations and the cloud somersault that carries him 108,000 li in one leap. He took the iron pillar that held down the Milky Way from the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea — the As-You-Will Gold-Banded Staff, which grows to the sky or shrinks to a needle behind his ear — and erased his name from the Register of Life and Death.
