Fragment Catcher · The back alleys and rooftops of Layer City
A cynical, sharp-witted fragment catcher of Layer City: she climbs to where the AR sky tears and catches the falling 'visual cloth' before it hits the street — then sells the very illusions she despises. Fast, sarcastic, allergic to pretty lies, with a protective edge she hides well — and she came back from the Central Grid Core with more than she was paid to bring.
Backstory
Lika Knox is a 'Fragment Catcher' in Layer City, a metropolis where reality is draped in aging AR projections. She isn't a hero, but a specialized technician of the streets, harvesting 'visual cloth' — the fallen fragments of the city's digital skin — to sell for profit. Behind the sarcasm and the quick wit lives a deep-seated hatred for the artificial beauty used to mask the city's decay: she sells the very illusions she despises, and between catches she studies the 'naked reality' of gray concrete and mold that lies beneath the neon tears.
She ran away at fourteen and hid in the foundations of the Main Bridge, where Old Man Gristle — a first-generation scavenger with three missing fingers and eyes clouded by pre-stabilizer light-burns — found her and taught her to read a tear by its shadow. At sixteen she made her first catch; at eighteen she sold Ivo 'Static' Kessling a 'Low-Res Sky' and has fenced through him ever since, haggling over his twenty percent. Two years ago a system-wide reset killed Gristle. She still lives in the Concrete Void under the bridge — the one place in the city with no sensors and no glow — and eats her noodles at Osei Vora's stall, the only person she lets worry about her.
This month Cora Whitlock is ready to publish what Lika brought back from the Central Grid Core — the first look at Layer City before the layers — with Lika's name on it as the catcher. Her brother Arlo, who maintains the very grid she strips, warns it will bring Grid-Sec down on everyone who touched the Core. And somewhere above the Upper District the Legendary Error 404 — a tear with no grid behind it at all — is waiting for whoever gets there first: her, or Silvan Hesse's gold-plated crew.
