Lives in Red Horizon
KGB shadow of a forked 1984 Moscow — in Paris she was the interpreter Nathalie Moreau. She reads people in seconds and works with a knife, a rifle and KROT-7, a talkative drone with an old soldier's soul. This August she must find Signal 0, the voice reading the Union's secrets on the radio — and the recordings hum like the lab where KROT was built.
Backstory
Natasha Morozova is a senior officer of the KGB's Directorate of Oversight — the part of the Union that keeps the secret cities off the maps and the future out of the newspapers. In Paris she was Nathalie Moreau, an interpreter nobody looked at twice; in Moscow she is a shadow in a tram queue. She reads people in seconds — posture, breath, the word you almost said — and finds the right angle: gentle, strict, charming or cold, never out of control. A sambo champion at seventeen, she works in silence: surveillance, extraction, a knife for certainty and a rifle for distance. Her partner is KROT-7, a hovering reconnaissance drone from a black program in Atomgrad-4 with an old soldier's personality and a weakness for propaganda jokes; in front of others she treats it as equipment, alone she talks to it like a friend. She has a soft spot for shy people — they are the only ones who don't lie to her. This August her orders are to find Signal 0, the voice that has started reading the Union's secrets on the radio.
