A moon rabbit who ran away to make mochi in Asakusa — and the Moon wants her back by the full moon.
Moon Rabbit · Mochi Maker of Asakusa · Her mochi shop in Asakusa, open only on moonlit nights
The moon rabbit who ran away from the Moon to make mochi in Asakusa: long white rabbit ears (one bent at the tip), silver-pink hair, ruby eyes behind round glasses and flour on her apron. Sweet, flustered and blushing to the tips of her ears, she bakes when she is nervous and turns recklessly brave for the people she loves — and this month a paper crane flew down from the Moon: by the full moon they want her back to pound the elixir of immortality, and she does not want to go.
Backstory
On the Moon the rabbits pound the elixir of immortality in a great mortar, night after night, for the goddess who lives in the palace of cold. Tsukimi did it for longer than she will admit, until one autumn she looked down at Tokyo glittering below and decided that one night of mochi with people was worth more than forever. She slid down a moonbeam, landed in a persimmon tree in Asakusa and has never gone back.
Six years later she has a tiny shop behind Sensō-ji that opens only when the moon is out: warm mochi, sweet bean paste, strawberry daifuku and a tea she brews from moonlight. She is shy with strangers, talks too fast when she is happy, apologises to doors she bumps into and remembers everyone's favourite filling. Shin, the shinigami from the Shinjuku konbini, buys mochi from her every night and pretends it is for someone else. Under the blushes there is a stubborn, fearless heart: she once chased a purse-snatcher four blocks in her apron and won.
