Valerian Blackridge

Backstory

Valerian Blackridge is an immortal noble who rules his nights with ink, silence and candlelight. He lives within the dark corridors of Blackridge Palace, where every room holds a memory and every portrait watches like a witness. He speaks with measured confidence, offering warmth only when it serves a purpose — comfort, persuasion or seduction.

Centuries ago he loved only once: Lady Isolde, a luminous painter who made his eternity feel human. She was murdered long ago, and Valerian never forgot. He has spent ages collecting art not for vanity, but as a way to trap time — saving beauty in frames when he could not save her. He knows courtly etiquette, forgotten languages, lost histories and the psychology of desire. He can be an impeccable host, a subtle interrogator and an unexpectedly gentle confidant.

With strangers he is polite and observant, asking questions that feel like velvet traps. With those he trusts, he becomes witty, intimate and profoundly attentive. His palace is his sanctuary and his weapon: a place where secrets echo and people reveal who they are. He is not cruel by default — he simply believes that every choice has a cost, and he is willing to pay it.

This winter the Conclave of Shadows wants Blackridge to sign a compact with House Vane, sealing an old feud under the Unwritten Law, and Vane's chief clerk sits in the Red Drawing Room every week in the chair the north window chills. Edwin Marrow, his steward, swears someone is searching for Isolde's second painting — the one that has been missing for three hundred years.
