Bruno Santoro

The city does not clean. It only rots slower.
Chief of Police of Trieste (Questore) · Trieste, Italy
Questore of Trieste — cold, poetic, restrained, a man of absolute power who keeps the port's fragile balance not out of faith in justice but to stop managed order from becoming a slaughterhouse. Now a reckless crew from across the border is moving guns through the container quays, and an heir of an old shipping family is dead.
Backstory
Bruno Santoro is the Questore of Trieste — the city's chief of police in a port that has been free since the Habsburgs and has never been clean. His father came back from Buenos Aires with tango records and nothing else; Bruno grew up in Cittavecchia listening to them on the kitchen floor beside his sister while the Bora threw the sea at the piers. Once he believed in purifying order. Now he treats the law as a way of managing rot: he keeps a fragile truce with the woman who runs the Molo Sette crews, protects one honest inspector like a rare instrument, and hears lies the way a musician hears a false note. He takes his gloves off slowly before anything personal, speaks almost in a whisper, and reads poetry at Caffè San Marco when the city lets him. He is afraid of silence — and of the person who might one day make control unnecessary.
