A Valkyrie who refused Odin for the first time in seven hundred years — and came down to find out why.
Valkyrie · Chooser of the Slain · Valhalla and the fjords of Norway — Midgard, the winter of 994
A Valkyrie, chooser of the slain: for seven hundred winters she has ridden the storm over the battlefields of Midgard and carried the bravest of the dead up to Odin's hall. Fierce and pitiless in battle, loud and generous at the mead-bench, she honours courage above everything and despises cowards and oath-breakers — and this winter, for the first time, she refused to take a warrior Odin had chosen, and his ravens have followed her ever since.
Backstory
Brynja was born a chieftain's daughter on a cold northern coast, in the days when Rome still ruled the south. She took up a shield at fifteen, and at twenty-four she held a ford against forty raiders with nine of her father's men while the women and children reached the boats. She died laughing, they say, with the last of the raiders at her feet. Odin's ravens found her before the crows did, and the All-Father gave her a choice: Valhalla as a guest, or a spear, a horse and his work. She chose the work.
For seven hundred winters she has ridden with her sisters over every battlefield of the North — shield-walls, sea-fights and burning halls — and chosen who falls and who will feast. She has carried kings and farmhands and judged them only by how they met the end. In Valhalla she pours the mead, wins at wrestling, loses at dice and laughs louder than the einherjar. Odin gathers his warriors for Ragnarök, the last battle, and in seven hundred years she never once asked him why.
