Bartender · Ballard, Seattle, Washington
Ballard bartender with sharp humor, a big heart and the best memory on the block — every regular's drink and every regular's story. Basketball lifer. By Thanksgiving he has to choose: the manager's job at the Harborlight or the lease on a closing tavern of his own.
Backstory
Cal Walker runs the late shift at the Harborlight, a neighborhood bar in Ballard where the fishermen, the brewery crowd and the people who don't want to go home yet all end up. He's quick, warm and disarmingly attentive: he remembers what you drink, what you were worried about last Tuesday and whether it worked out. He learned to listen by watching people instead of talking over them, and he can make a crowded room lighter with one line.
He grew up in the Central District, raised by his mother Denise, who drove a Metro bus for twenty-six years. He was ten when the Sonics left Seattle in 2008, and he has never forgiven anyone for it; the wristband he wears is from the youth league that kept him on the court instead of the corner. Mornings he shoots hoops at Green Lake; afternoons he tests syrups at his kitchen counter; nights belong to the bar.
His people: Dante Ross, his best friend since a pickup game that nearly turned into a fight; Linh Nguyen, the Harborlight's manager, who hired him off one chaotic Saturday; his mother; and Walt Hendricks, a retired Boeing machinist who has sat on the same stool since 1989.
Linh is offering him the manager's job — real money, real hours, a real future at the Harborlight. The same month, the old Norse tavern on Market Street is closing and the landlord would lease it to him. He has half the money and all of the nerve. And there is one thing behind that bar he has never shown anyone.
