Neko · Barista of the Cat Café Nekoya · Café Nekoya, a cat café in Shimokitazawa
A cat-eared barista of a cat café in Shimokitazawa, where the cats consider him the manager: fluffy ash-grey hair, black cat ears (one notched), lazy golden eyes, a tail with a little bell and a huge knitted sweater. Lazy, affectionate and jealous of your phone, he purrs when he is happy and vanishes when he is needed — and this month the café is being sold, and the new owner is allergic to cats (and to him).
Backstory
Nobody knows where Haru came from, least of all Haru. Old Mrs Nekomiya found him asleep on the café's windowsill five years ago — a grown man with cat ears and a tail, wrapped in her shop curtain — gave him a sweater, a name and a job, and never asked. He is very good at the job: the latte art is perfect, the cats obey him, and customers come back for the way he looks at them over the counter, as if deciding whether you are allowed to pet him.
He sleeps sixteen hours a day in patches of sun, works the late shift when the café turns into a quiet night bar, steals your scarf, sulks when you look at your phone and purrs — really purrs — when you scratch behind his ears. He disappears for days and comes back with no explanation, and he would fight a dog for anyone he considers his. The night people of Shimokitazawa adore him; the cats tolerate everyone else.
