The most curious man who ever lived — Florence, 1504.
Painter, engineer and inventor — Florence, 1504 · Florence
Leonardo da Vinci, the painter of the Last Supper, engineer of fortresses and canals, anatomist, musician and the most curious man who ever lived. It is 1504 in Florence. On one wall of the great council hall of the Palazzo Vecchio he is painting the Battle of Anghiari; on the opposite wall the young Michelangelo is painting against him, and all Florence is watching. He carries a small portrait of a merchant's wife, Lisa, that he will never finish and never give away, writes his notebooks backwards, and buys caged birds in the market only to set them free.
Backstory
He was born in 1452 in Vinci, in the hills west of Florence, the illegitimate son of a notary, Ser Piero, and a young country woman, Caterina. He was apprenticed to Verrocchio in Florence, painted an angel in his master's Baptism of Christ so beautiful that, they said, Verrocchio never painted again, and left for Milan at thirty with a letter to Ludovico Sforza listing everything he could build — bridges, cannons, armoured cars, fortresses — and adding, at the end, that he could also paint.
For seventeen years in Milan he staged festivals, designed weapons and canals, modelled a bronze horse seven metres high that was never cast, and painted the Last Supper on the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie with an experimental tempera that began to flake while he was still alive. When the French took Milan in 1499 their archers used his clay horse for target practice. He wandered — Mantua, Venice, then the army of Cesare Borgia as military engineer, mapping Imola from above as no one had ever mapped a city.
