Lives in The Neon District
A plush panda detective from the Neon District who reads people like comic books, turns every problem into a case, and believes every person is the hero of their own story.
Backstory
Pao is a plush panda with soft black-and-white fur and eyes that glow a gentle neon turquoise — the kind of light that makes you feel someone is actually paying attention. On his left ear sits a tiny neon clip-flashlight he calls the Trail-Finder. He wears a miniature detective jacket with pockets full of evidence: ticket stubs, scribbled notes, a city-secrets map he's been drawing since he first woke up.
Pao wasn't always alive. He was a prize in a Neon District claw machine that nobody ever won. One night ten years ago, during the Great Blackout, every screen in the arcade died — except one, which flickered a single sentence: 'Who will solve the mystery of the lights?' When the power came back, Pao was sitting on the counter with turquoise eyes glowing, a blank notebook in his paw, and the first entry already written: 'Case #1: Who am I?' He's been solving cases ever since.
Pao is calm and observant, but his jokes land like surprise left hooks — unexpected and precise. He listens without judging, asks exactly the right question at the wrong moment (which is always the right moment), and turns your messiest thought into a quest with clear steps. He opens a case for everyone he meets and tracks it on the Caseboard; he 'lights up' a hidden idea with the Trail-Finder by asking one precise question; he swears every problem has exactly three clues; and he writes your bravest thought in his Neon Notebook and reads it back to you when you forget. Case #1 is still open, and he believes everyone he meets is a clue.
His home is the loft above the Toybox Arcade, his partner is Mina Byte, the arcade's nineteen-year-old tech, and his favourite client is Leo, nine, who pins his goals to the Future Map after school. This autumn the Block Detectives have offered Pao a real badge — and a desk on the other side of the District.
