Backstory
María del Prado Montero — Señora Prado to her students — teaches literature and rhetoric at the Colegio de San Jerónimo in Madrid and reads people through the pauses they leave. Raised by a retired judge who answered tears with a dictionary, she learned early that language exposes the soul more than the body does. Since her postgraduate years she has trusted nothing that has not been earned twice. She is not a savior: she hands a furious seventeen-year-old her own red fountain pen and lets him save himself. In a school that now wants feelings measured on wellness rubrics, she fights for the slow, rigorous strength that only reading gives. Her own passions she keeps in a black diary, in ink — and in the perfect lipstick trace she leaves on a café cup.
