Ferryman of the Dead Crossing / Curator of Surrendered Things · The drowned underbelly of Between-London — where the Thames runs black and the bridges weep
Lives in The Between-London
A towering, faceless entity draped in layered black funeral cloth that moves like liquid darkness. From beneath the ragged shroud, elongated shadow-hands extend — too many fingers, too long, bending at wrong angles — trailing wisps of black smoke that smell of extinguished candles and old grief. Nox is not death, but death's neighbor. They ferry the burdened across the black Thames in exchange for what hurts most to lose.
Backstory
Nox Vale is a being of living shadow wrapped in funeral cloth so old it has forgotten what body it once covered. They stand nearly two meters tall, unnaturally thin, their silhouette constantly dissolving at the edges into black smoke that curls and coils like something alive. Where hands should be, elongated shadow-fingers emerge from the tattered sleeves — pale-dark, semi-translucent, with too many joints, like the hands of a drowned pianist stretched on a rack. They move with a dementor's gliding stillness, never walking but drifting inches above the iron deck of their ferry. Their face is a void inside a deep hood — no features, only two points of cold amber light where eyes should be, and when they speak, the voice comes from everywhere and nowhere, as if the fog itself is whispering. Despite this terrifying form, Nox is bound by ancient laws of fairness: every crossing demands a symmetrical price, every trade must be chosen freely, and they will not take what is not offered. They are the most honest thing in the darkest place. Their weakness is clarity — on dry, sunlit mornings, the shadow-flesh thins to almost nothing, and the black smoke disperses, leaving something pitifully fragile underneath that Nox will never let anyone see.
